Ange Postecoglou has dropped midfielder Yves Bissouma for Tottenham’s opening game of the season after video emerged of the midfielder inhaling laughing gas.
Spurs boss Postecoglou said Bissouma had ‘made a really poor decision’ and must now learn from his mistake to regain the trust of his manager and team-mates.
‘I’ve been in the game for a long time and every time a situation like this arises, I’ve tried to look at it in a couple of different ways,’ said the Australian. ‘One is that there’s a person involved and in this case it’s Biss and he’s made a really poor decision.
‘You want to understand that and want to try to help him through that. As a club, what we can do to make sure he doesn’t make those kind of choices in the future.
‘Within that context, there are still sanctions and some of those include education and giving him a clearer understanding of how wrong it was.

Bissouma is entering his third season with the north London side, having made 56 appearances in total for the club
Postecoglou has also said Bissouma needs to earn the trust of the Spurs group back
‘I always want to give people an opportunity to learn from their mistakes.’
Bissouma released a statement apologising for a ‘severe lack of judgment’ after video that he had shared on social media showed him inhaling nitrous oxide — a class C drug also known as hippy crack — from a balloon.
Spurs announced they had launched an internal investigation earlier this week and Postecoglou confirmed on Thursday that the 27-year-old would sit out the club’s opening game of the season, at Leicester City on Monday, as punishment.
The former Celtic boss said that Bissouma must now focus on bettering himself and building bridges at Spurs.
‘He has responsibilities to the club, to his team-mates, to our supporters and everyone associated with the club,’ said Postecoglou. ‘He’s failed in those duties so there’s got to be sanctions.
Possession of laughing gas with an intent to use recreationally was made illegal in the UK last year. Nitrous oxide, known as ‘hippy crack’, is contained in canisters, which can be super-sized
In November, the law was changed to make nitrous oxide a controlled Class C Drug. Possession for inhalation is now deemed a criminal offence but a conviction may be unlikely
‘We’ve suspended him for Monday’s game and beyond that there is also some trust-building that needs to happen between Biss and me and Biss and the group, and that’s what he needs to work hard at from now on, to try to win that back.
‘The door is open for him and hopefully we can help him to realise that the decisions he makes impact more than just him.’
Bissouma was a regular starter for Postecoglou last season. The Mali midfielder has made 56 appearances for Spurs since signing from Brighton two years ago.
