Manchester City have agreed a £42million deal with Leeds United to sign England midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

The England international had interest from other Premier League sides and last week Leeds had a call from Paris Saint-Germain.

However, the only side Phillips would entertain moving to from his hometown club was City, according to insiders. Young City midfielder Darko Gyarbi is expected to head in the opposite direction in a separate £5m deal.

Leeds - who could received around £3m in add-ons in the deal - were resigned to losing Phillips in the early stages of this transfer window.

Phillips was keen on joining City in a switch which would secure him Champions League football next season and help cement his place in England’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

Pep Guardiola had set his sights on securing a new central midfielder, with Phillips top of a list of replacements for departing captain Fernandinho.

The Brazilian said farewell to fans at the Premier League title parade after nine years at the Etihad.

Phillips has been identified as possessing the perfect profile for the squad. The Premier League champions stepped up their interest in him after completing the signing of striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund last week.

Meanwhile, City outgoings could include Raheem Sterling - who has been linked with Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

And Gabriel Jesus is also expected to depart - with Arsenal on the verge of wrapping up a £50m transfer.

It is understood that the Gunners and Manchester City are closing in on an agreement that would see the 25-year-old striker head to north London.

There is now a confidence that completion is close for the Brazilian, who has been Arsenal’s priority target.

Sportsmail reported this week that Leeds were looking at RB Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams after stepping up a recruitment drive in the event that Phillips left.

Adams worked under current Leeds boss Jesse Marsch when the American coach worked at the Bundesliga club last year.
