Former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke fears he may only be able to manage in English football if he buys a club.

The 52-year-old got his hands on three Premier League titles and was a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson's treble winning side of 1999. The ex-striker has seen a number of his old United teammates afforded the opportunity to coach in this county.

While, he can also point to the likes of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney, who have also received high-profile positions.

Yet, the chances for black managers have looked comparatively slim and have been highlighted not just in the career of Yorke, who enjoyed a brief stint in Australia as manager of Macarthur FC, but also with the likes of Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole.

Yorke reckons that his only solution is to unite with other former black professional footballers to buy and club - where, presumably, he would be able to lead a side on these shores.

'It's been talked about heavily in previous years,' he told The Mirror. 'The people that I come across in football, we’ve spoken about it.

'Forming a consortium, trying to get a football team to get the right backing from maybe black ownership, black millionaires or billionaires, so to speak, to embrace it. It’s something that’s probably worth having a conversation about again in terms of going forward.

'Because, as you know, we keep reverting back to the facts about the struggles of black managers to get into these high positions. So the only way forward, maybe, is to buy a football team.'

Before joining United in 1998, Yorke won two League Cups with Aston Villa. His only other honour in England came in 2007, when he helped Sunderland gain promotion to the Premier League.

The Trinidad and Tobago international had, a year earlier, won the A-League with Sydney FC in 2006 and would later return to the country to lift the Australian Cup with Macarthur in 2022.

But despite this success, offers have not flooded in. Yorke though, remains optimistic of landing his dream gig, regardless of the skepticism of his old striking buddy.

'I recall having the conversation with my close friend Andy Cole,' he added. 'It's a waste of time. You’ll never get a job in English football. He knows what he was talking about. But I embrace the challenge. I like to defy the odds.

'I did it as a player and I’ll do it again as a manager. I showed in Australia that I’m a proven winner, that I can win and manage at any level. But you need that opportunity. Unfortunately, as a player you have control over your ability and when you play.'
