Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has claimed that stats prove Arsenal 'should' have won the Premier League last season.

Ultimately, the Gunners came up short against Manchester City in a thrilling title race that went down to the final day of the campaign.

Speaking from a training camp in Marbella, Arteta told ESPN: 'When you are analytical and you gather all the stats and everything the team has done over the past 11 months in the Premier League, we should have won it. That's what the stats say.'

Arteta did not elaborate on which specific measures show that Arsenal should have pipped City rather than the other way around.

'The reality is that we didn't so there is something that is there that we haven't managed as well as Man City or other clubs in the past. I think we understand where those margins are. I think we have come very far.

'We have been really consistent now in the past 24 months in terms of performance and the levels that we want to hit. But those margins are super small.

'One thing is to get the 90% that we want and actually the 10%, 5%, 1% is what defines success and winning major trophies.

He added: 'Now we have to continue to do all the right things that we are doing and just make those small margins that are going to be able to win the tournaments.'

When asked if he had 'got over' losing out to Pep Guardiola's side, the Spaniard insisted that was not a feeling he wants to shed, meaning he can use it as added motivation.

'I don't want to get over it,' he continued. '

'I am really satisfied with the way the team is performing, the way the players are evolving, what the team transmits, the momentum we have as a football club. In all departments, not only on the men's side, what we are doing with the academy, the prospects that we have there.

'But we need that pain and that hunger to achieve what we want to achieve because the competition is unbelievable and we are going to need everybody feeling that way to achieve it.'

Arsenal fell two points short of Man City after 38 games in an incredibly tight two-horse race, that had been three until Liverpool fell away.

Both teams ended up on a goal difference of +62 and no doubt the battle for the title this upcoming season will be just as ferocious.

Arteta says Arsenal 'have a very clear' idea of what the club want to do in the transfer market this summer. Italy star Ricciardo Calafiori is one player in talks.

The activity is expected to ramp up once the Euros have finished, with the Gunners chasing additions to narrow the gap to Guardiola's champions.
