Logan Sargeant's rookie Formula One season is getting more difficult by the weekend, with the American finishing last on track for a third straight race in Spain.

Sargeant secured a drive at Williams to become the sport's first F1 driver since 2015, but the team's uncompetitive car, coupled with the 22-year-old relative inexperience, has made for a tough start to life at the top of the sport.

This week was no different in Barcelona, with Sargeant finishing dead last in 20th, marking the third straight race he has come bottom of the pile.

Fans were quick to take to social media to give their thoughts on the California-born racer, with one calling his performance in Barcelona 'completely dismal'.

Another, meanwhile, noted: 'It's definitely questionable as to whether Logan Sargeant is F1 material at this point.'

Elsewhere, one F1 fan wrote: 'Can we get Logan Sargeant out of F1? Bro's making us Americans look real bad.'

There were some more positive comments for Sargeant from other social media users though, with one hitting back to note: 'It's his 8th race have some patience my goodness.' 

Another said: 'His pace was solid today, quicker than Albon on the second stint. Also notice how he didn't crash in a difficult car like the driver in his third year.'

In reality, Sargeant's difficult few weeks cannot be blamed solely on his driving ability, but the fact that he has only once managed to finish ahead of his teammate Alex Albon in seven races is cause for concern.

In the last three races, Sargeant has finished 20/20, 18/18 and 20/20, meaning he was the last car to cross the finish line in Monaco, Barcelona, and at his home race in Miami.

Sargeant's best finish of his rookie season so far came in the opening race of the year in Bahrain, with the Williams man running in 12th, two places behind his teammate Albon, who secured a point. 

In the second race, Albon was a DNF, meaning that Sargeant finished above him in 16th despite him being over 86 seconds behind race winner Sergio Perez.

Things have since gone from bad to worse, though, and this weekend in Barcelona saw Sargeant crash into the barriers in the third and final practice session ahead of qualifying. 

In a fortnight's time, F1 heads back across the Atlantic to Canada, where Sargeant will hope to impress the North American racing fans with a better display on track.
