Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has agreed a three-year deal to become the next manager of Bayern Munich, just two weeks after getting relegated from the Premier League.

It is believed Kompany, a German speaker, will sign a deal until 2027, with the Clarets getting £10million in compensation.

The former Manchester City and Belgium captain was way down the wanted list as Bayern looked for a replacement for Thomas Tuchel.

The German giants had tried to lure Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, Germany’s Julian Nagelsmann and Austria head coach Ralf Rangnick.

In the past few days, former player and president Uli Hoeness urged the club to bring back Hansi Flick, who is tipped to replace Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona.

Kompany impressed in his first management role at Anderlecht and led Burnley to the Championship title last year.

Kompany had agreed a deal in principle earlier this week, but has now signed off on his agreement to swap management in England for the Bundesliga.

Floribert Ngalula will join the Belgian as assistant coach, Bram Geers will be athletics coach and Rene Maric, who was previously under-19 coach at Bayern, will also be in Kompany's new-look team in Germany.

The move is intended to see Kompany as a long-term manager at Bayern Munich, not just a temporary solution to their recent issues with finding someone for the club.

There was speculation that Bayern sought an interim solution, but the process behind hiring Kompany and his team from Burnley has shown that the Bundesliga side are hoping for a long-term solution.

However, Craig Bellamy, the Belgian's No. 2 at Burnley, will not follow Kompany to his new job in Germany.  Burnley recorded just five victories all season, despite spending in excess of £90million last summer.

But Kompany spent two seasons at Hamburg before joining Man City in 2008, speaks fluent German, and has impressed the Bayern hierarchy with his football philosophy.

The 38-year-old built a decent reputation as a manager at Anderlecht after becoming head coach in 2020, following a spell as player-manager, before moving to Turf Moor and winning the Championship with Burnley in 2023.

Bayern Munich finished third in the Bundesliga this season under Tuchel, behind title winners Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart, while their Champions League campaign ended at the semi-final stage.

Bayern terminated Tuchel's contract as manager earlier in the year, although they later opened negotiations to try and retain his services, which failed to reach a deal.

Tuchel is now a leading candidate for the Manchester United job, with Erik ten Hag looking likely to exit after Saturday's FA Cup final at Wembley.
