Roberto de Zerbi has agreed a deal in principle to become Marseille manager in his first post since leaving Brighton at the end of the season.

The Italian had been linked with taking over at both Manchester United and Liverpool before Erik ten Hag was kept in his position at Old Trafford and Arne Slot moved to Anfield.

He was also discussed as a potential successor to Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea prior to the Blues hiring Enzo Maresca from Leicester.

De Zerbi had previously expressed a desire to move back to his native Italy but is now set to join French side Marseille following two years managing in the Premier League.

The 45-year-old will succeed Jean-Louis Gasset who stepped down from his post at the conclusion of the Ligue 1 season after announcing his retirement.

Gasset, 70, had previously only become manager on an interim basis in February following Gennaro Gattuso's sacking but was unable to stop Marseille finishing in a lowly eighth league position.

It was a disappointing year for the French side, who had the year before come third and were hoping to push on and look to mount a challenge for the French top-flight title.

Announcing De Zerbi's new position, a Marseille statement read: 'The club is currently working with all parties involved to formalise the arrival of the Italian coach and his staff on the OM bench, and to prepare for his arrival in Marseille in the coming days.'

De Zerbi will hope to rediscover his first season form at Brighton when he begins pre-season training with Marseille in the upcoming weeks.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk coach guided Brighton to sixth in his first season in charge after replacing Graham Potter and into the Europa League for the first time in the club's history.

However, a difficult following campaign saw the Seagulls finish 11th and crash out of the Europa League after being thrashed by Roma across two legs.

It was mutually agreed that De Zerbi would leave the Amex stadium in the summer and is now set to manage in France for the first time in his career.
