Jurgen Klopp says he could change his formation to stop the rot - with Liverpool boss considering switching from a 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 - as Reds look for a much-needed win against Rangers

Jurgen Klopp made the situation sound simple but, as he was gloomily resting his chin on his hand, his body language told you simple wasn't an option.

'We have to increase the amount of good moments and decrease the amount of not-so-good-moments,' he muttered and how he must have wished that little synopsis could be easily applied to his team's current predicament.

Liverpool aren't playing like Liverpool but, most worryingly for Klopp, they don't even look like Liverpool. There have always been times on his watch when they have shipped goals and been in helter-skelter contests but this period is proving particularly troubling.

Such is the manager's concern, he is even considering tweaking his formation to make Liverpool difficult to break down once again, moving away from the tried and trusted 4-3-3 system that has brought so much success.

It would be a significant change if Klopp played three central defenders but it is more likely that he settles on 4-2-3-1 for the visit of Rangers, the first meeting between these decorated clubs in Europe.

Plenty will favour Liverpool to win this Battle of Britain comfortably but Klopp is absolutely not taking anything for granted, particularly given the results Giovanni van Bronckhorst has masterminded in Europe.

The way Rangers play, they could absolutely do damage to Liverpool if the gaps that have been present - especially so in Saturday's 3-3 draw with Brighton - continue to remain open, so it is little wonder Klopp is racking his brains to work out his next move.

'No, we don't have the time,' said Klopp, when asked how he could hone a new system at the training pitches at their base in Kirkby. 'Yes, we can improve. We can play exactly the same and do better, that is already a fix.

'If we can do something (else), we will do, to make it easier for the boys. That is always the job, it is the same job I had when you win 12 games in a row. You have to stay on top and work on the details. That is what we do now, just with a different confidence level.

'Usually when you win a lot of games, not everything goes your way, but there is no impact. We may have made a mistake but no one has it in their mind. (Now) we lose the ball, they have a chance. That is different in the moment.'

Mistakes, however, are proving very impactful and they have arrived with such frequency that there has been a dramatic shift in the objectives. Getting out of this Champions League group is all that matters at present. Thoughts of going to Istanbul are on hold.

Increasingly animated meetings - certainly on Klopp's behalf - have taken place with increasing regularity and you get the impression that nothing will give the German greater delight than when calmness and order have been restored at Anfield.

'We had this wonderful conversation already this year,' said Klopp. 'Especially after (being defeated 4-1 by) Napoli when we all realised: "Wow that is a low point! We have to change things quickly". We didn't play Chelsea, which meant we couldn't pick anything up and keep it from the Ajax game.

'Then, on top of that, we faced Brighton in a very good moment - a very good team with a new manager and we concede these two early goals. In that situation it is not helpful but in other situations maybe less harmful than it was for us that day.

'Always in life when you spot a problem, you think about it, think you have a solution and then you expect the solution to be instantly influential, sorted. That in football is never the case and it would not have been the case had we won the game 3-2.

'We have to improve. We have to play consistently better, defend better, attack better - pretty much everything. I don't want to talk too much about it but it is only two years ago we had a similar situation for different reasons where we lost all our centre halves and we had to find solutions.'

Eventually, Liverpool found their way out of the fog in 2020-21 but it wasn't without suffering. There were six home defeats in a row, stories that Klopp had reached the end of his tether and wanted to leave. We are not at that stage here but the fact that he drew a parallel shows his mindset.

'We lost our game completely, nobody could recognise us anymore,' said Klopp. 'We wore the same shirts but couldn't react as quick as people would wish but we found a way out because we worked on it and this is what we will do this time.

'Rangers do extremely well, in general, but in the Champions League their results were not what they would have wanted so we are expecting a team who are fighting for a result. That is what we have to prepare for.'
