Chelsea fans plan applause for Thomas Tuchel in the 21st minute of their clash with Red Bull Salzburg - referencing the year he guided them to Champions League glory - to pay tribute to the sacked boss in Graham Potter's first Stamford Bridge outing

  • Chelsea fans will pay tribute to former manager Thomas Tuchel this evening
  • The Blues' Champions League clash is the first match since Tuchel was sacked
  • They will begin a new era under boss Graham Potter against Red Bull Salzburg

Chelsea supporters will pay tribute to former manager Thomas Tuchel when they face Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League tonight in the first game since the German was sacked.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss was axed last Wednesday, just seven games into the season, after Chelsea's new owners opted to change manager following the assessments they made during the first 100 days of their ownership.

The Blues moved swiftly to replace Tuchel with former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Graham Potter the following day.

It is the first match since Tuchel was axed last Wednesday after just seven games this season

Potter will take charge for the first time since being appointed at Chelsea as they look to get their Champions League campaign back on track after losing 1-0 to Dinamo Zagreb in their group-stage opener.

Chelsea supporters group 'We Are The Shed' have revealed that they will hold a minute's applause to pay tribute to the German in the 21st minute.

The movement tweeted: 'Tonight will be our first game since Thomas Tuchel got sacked.

'We will not be using the crowdsurfer out of respect to The Queen's passing/pre match plans.

'Instead, we're encouraging people to stand & applaud on the 21st min to say 'thank you' (the year he won us the CL).'

The 21st minute has been chosen as the most suitable moment as he lifted the club's second Champions League trophy last year when Chelsea beat Manchester City in 2021.

The applause will replace the 'crowdsurfer' which Chelsea supporters would have used as a tribute, which due to the Queen's death they are not bringing out as a sign of respect.

Tuchel broke his silence on Sunday to reveal his devastation following his shock Chelsea sacking.

'This is one of the most difficult statements I have ever had to write - and it is one I hoped I would not need to do for many years. I am devastated that my time at Chelsea has come to an end,' Tuchel said.

'This is a club where I felt at home, both professionally and personally. Thank you so much to all the staff, the players and the supporters for making me feel very welcome from the start.

'The pride and joy I felt at helping the team to win the Champions League and the Club World Cup will stay with me forever.

'I am honoured to have been a part of this club's history and the memories of the last 19 months will always have a special place in my heart.'

Tuchel was popular among Chelsea supporters after helping guide them to the Champions League trophy in his first season at the club.

Last year, the Blues finished third, though a long way off Manchester City and Liverpool - losing to the latter on penalties in the finals of both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
