Alvaro Morata opens up on split with model wife Alice Campello after seven years and reveals why he had to 'flee Spain' following Euro 2024 win amid 'devastation'

Alvaro Morata has opened up on his 'devastating' split from his wife Alice Campello. 

The former Chelsea striker and the model split a week ago after seven years of marriage, during which time they produced four children. 

They have insisted they still love each other and sought to dismiss any scurrilous rumours - or 'bulls***', the phrase Campello deployed - after Morata was accused of being in explicit photographs with another woman. 

So forceful has the pressure been that Euro 2024-winning captain Morata - who recently signed for AC Milan after two years at Atletico Madrid - felt compelled to 'flee' his homeland. 

'I am tired of people saying that I was unfaithful to Alice because I didn't even go to the national team party so that this type of rumour wouldn't arise,' Morata told 'D Corazon' on La 1 via AS. 

'Since then I haven't spoken to anyone out of respect for her and so that this type of news doesn't arise.

'I am devastated. I have fled Spain because I cannot bear the pressure and criticism any longer.'

On the show, Morata insisted that he and Campello have a 'very good relationship because of our four children' but that their break-up is irreversible. 

Just two weeks before their split the pair were spotted kissing on a beach during a family holiday in Sardinia.

Campello was also pictured by her husband's side after he captained Spain to victory in the final of Euro 2024 on July 14 thanks to a 2-1 win over England. 

Confirming their break-up last Monday, Morata wrote on Instagram: 'After some time of reflection, Alice and I have made the decision to part ways. A WONDERFUL and RESPECTFUL reciprocal relationship where we have loved and helped each other a lot.

'They have been wonderful years and the result of them is our four children, who are undoubtedly the best thing we have ever done.'

Their fourth child, Bella, was born last year.  

Morata added: 'It is a painful decision so we ask for respect and empathy. Do not invent stories for a minute of prominence because I repeat: there has never been any lack of respect, only many continuous misunderstandings that little by little wear things down.

'Alice will always have a special place in my heart and everything we have experienced together has been incredible and a great learning'. 

Taking to social media, Campello wrote: 'Alvaro and I have decided to separate, and it is the most difficult decision we have ever made in our lives. I want to make it clear, as he has, that there have been no third parties or any kind of disrespect from either of us.

'I can only say that in these 8 years, I have had a person by my side who has done nothing but prioritise me, take care of me, and respect me, and for that reason, I cannot allow any kind of false speculation and the decision to announce it "so soon".

'I don't want you to think that anything you have seen in the Instagram photos we've been posting is a lie. We couldn't have loved each other more, and we continue to do so, but there comes a time when many misunderstandings accumulate, are poorly managed, and things gradually deteriorate and explode.

'We have always promised each other to respect everything we have lived through, to never reach the point of hurting each other or being toxic, and to end things before that happens, and that is what we've done.

'I just want to thank Alvaro for everything he has done for me, for how he has taken care of me, for being the father and husband he has been, and to wish him the best ALWAYS.'

Describing how they had mutually decided to end their marriage, Campello also said via Marca: 'We are two young people, we have both been immature when it comes to managing certain situations, there are many children, moments of instability of being from one country to the other.

'My postpartum depressions have influenced and yours, too, which has not allowed us to manage certain situations between us.'

Morata and Campello have remained on good terms since announcing their decision as they attempt to navigate their way through a respectful divorce in the weeks and months ahead.

Campello hit back at suggestions of infidelity as 'bull****' in an impassioned post on social media as speculation intensified surrounding the reasoning for the split and has explained how they are still in love.

'We love each other infinitely, love does not end from one day to the next, we respect each other a lot and nothing will change,' she continued.

'It is what we both needed now, however, I know that Álvaro would kill for me,' added Campello.
