New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is finalizing a deal to acquire a major Premier League club, marking his entry into European football. He tried to accomplish that dream in 2022 when he submitted a bid for Chelsea but was unsuccessful. Now, after the frustrating dream of that year, the target is located once again in London.
Woody Johnson, 78, is an heir to the Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical empire and has owned the New York Jets since 2000. A prominent figure in sports, business, and politics, Johnson also served as U.S. ambassador to the United Kingdom. His family's company is valued at approximately $9.18 billion, making it one of the most influential in the country.
The London-based club, set to compete in international tournaments this season, has reportedly sold 43% of its ownership stake for a value between $220 million and $260 million. This agreement shows the growing trend of American investors in European soccer.
The English club targeted by Jets Owner Woody Johnson.
Crystal Palace, commonly known as 'The Eagles,' has a new majority shareholder. Following a historic season in which the club lifted its first-ever FA Cup title and secured Europa League qualification for the first time in its 164-year history, the team has attracted the attention of major investors. Among them is Woody Johnson, owner of the New York Jets, who saw Palace's rising profile as the perfect opportunity
The South London club confirmed the news through an official statement on its website: "Crystal Palace Football Club can confirm that Robert Wood Johnson, "Woody", an American businessman and co-owner of the New York Jets, has signed a legally binding contract to purchase Eagle Football's holding in the Club".
They also added that "Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club."

It's worth noting that Johnson acquired a 43% stake previously held by John Textor, who had been involved with the club for the past four years as both a partner and director and who already has the largest participation on Botafogo from Brazil, Olympique Lyonnais, and other teams.
New Owner Could Secure Europa League spot.
Crystal Palace fans are breathing a sigh of relief with the news of the club's new ownership. After they entered the Europa League tournament, doubts have arisen with the UEFA multi-club ownership rules, which forbid the participation of two squads competing in the same competition.
This is since Olympique Lyon has also qualified for the international competition, and they also formed part of the group managed by John Textor, who was the last owner of Crystal Palace. This has fueled speculation that one of the two clubs could be barred from participating in the prestigious competition.
However, with Woody Johnson's arrival, the Eagles are poised to make their long-awaited European debut, though UEFA's final decision on their participation is expected by the end of the month.
