The priest stabbed alongside a bishop in an alleged 'act of terror' in Sydney has been released from hospital and appears to be in good spirits.

Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was allegedly stabbed multiple times by a boy, 16, while giving a sermon at Christ the Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley on Monday evening.

Father Isaac Royel suffered injuries to his hand and should coming to the bishop's aid.

He walked out of Liverpool hospital on Wednesday and was seen waving to an exhilarated neighbour with a bandage wrapped around his hand.

Bishop Emmanuel remains in hospital in a stable condition after undergoing surgery on Tuesday.

The incident sparked a riot outside the church on Monday with a crowd of 2,000 people chanting 'bring him out' and 'an eye for an eye' as police kept the alleged knifeman inside the building amid fears for his own safety.

On Wednesday evening police revealed they had arrested a 19-year-old man - the first to be made over the 'public order incident'. Charges are yet to be laid.

During the furore, projectiles were thrown at officers, about 50 police vehicles were damaged, and property was stolen.

Two police officers were taken to hospital after being injured by members of the crowd who broke into 'a number of houses to gain weapons to throw at the police'.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has criticised those who attacked police cars following the terror attack in Sydney last night.

'I certainly understand the distress and concerns which are there, particularly after the tragic event at Bondi,' he said.

'But it is completely not acceptable to impede and injure police doing their duty or to damage police vehicles in the way that occurred last night,' he exclaimed.

Mr Albanese urged the public to remain calm.

The teenager accused of carrying out the attack reportedly made a series of religious comments to a group of parishioners moments after the bishop was stabbed.

An Arabic translation of his comments says: 'If he didn't swear at my Prophet I wouldn't be here. If he didn't involve himself in my religion I wouldn't be here'.

He has been taken to an undisclosed location where he remains under police guard.

Police confirmed the 16-year-old had undergone surgery for serious injuries to his hands after rumours swirled he lost a finger during the alleged attack.

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb branded the attack on the bishop as a 'terrorist incident' that was 'centred around religion'.

She said the suspect was known to police but was not on any terror watch lists.

'We will allege there is a degree of premeditation.. this person has travelled to that location... he's travelled with a knife and subsequently the bishop and the priest have been stabbed,' Commissioner Webb said on Tuesday.

'They are lucky to be alive.'

The decision from Comissioner Webb led to a joint Counter Terrorism Team being launched to investigate the incident

The team includes members from the NSW Police Force, Australian Federal Police, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation and the NSW Crime Commission.

The attacked sparked mass unrest as angry mobsters descended on the church and clashed with police while attempting to reach the teenage accused who was at the scene hours later

NSW Police made their first arrest in relation to the riots, a 19-year-old man, on Wednesday afternoon after Commissioner Webb branded the attack on the bishop a 'terrorist incident'

Given the accused knifeman's young age, some have questioned the decision to brand the incident as terror-related, and insisted that mental health may have been the overarching cause.

NSW Premier Chris Minns, however, said he is comfortable with the police decision.

'It's really important to know, and I made this clear to community leaders that I spoke with today, that this is not a designation about the person of interest currently in police custody,' he told ABC's 7.30 Report.

'This is a designation that is required under legislation to unlock powers for that inquiry, and police made that judgement. This is not a performative gesture.'

Mr Minns said Commissioner Webb made the decision 'on information suggesting a religiously motivated attack' which was also allegedly premeditated.

When asked if the decision was correctly made, the premier said: 'I believe it was'.

'This is a judgement call,' he added. 'My judgement is it was the right decision last night.'
