A former Manchester United coach that helped the club to several Premier League titles during Sir Alex Ferguson's reign at the club has blasted Erik ten Hag for making 'no progress'.

United's dreadful season took another turn for the worst on Monday evening as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park - their heaviest of the season.

Erik ten Hag's position as Man United manager has never looked more precarious as the Red Devils slumped to eight in the Premier League table and pressure is mounting on the Dutchman.

New investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe is weighing up whether to make a change in the dugout at the end of the season and a former coach has been left outraged at United's performances this season.

Rene Meulensteen served under Sir Alex Ferguson during six years at Old Trafford between 2007-2013 and fumed there is 'no progress' being made at his former club.

Speaking to Dutch outlet NOS, he said: 'It is really incomprehensible what is happening now. There is simply no progress whatsoever.

'You know, as a new trainer you always have to deal with a selection that you have not put together yourself.

'So, it takes a few transfer periods before you get the players you want. I always say, a trainer needs 18 months to get it right, to get on track.

'But now there is none of that optimism left. There is no playing style, club culture or philosophy.

'If you look at the statistics it doesn't make any sense. Manchester United has a goal difference of minus three!,' he added.

Ten Hag worked wonders during his first 12 months in Manchester, winning the Carabao Cup, progressing to the FA Cup final and taking the club to 3rd in the English top-flight during his debut campaign.

However, the 54-year-old has endured a second miserable year at the club with United exiting the Champions League at the group stage and now set to miss out on qualifying for European competition next year.
