Rosenborg 1-0 Man United RECAP: Red Devils concede injury-time winner in first friendly of the summer

United defeated in Trondheim...

Well then, Manchester United's pre-season is officially underway.

It has not gotten off to the start Erik ten Hag would have wanted, as they fell to defeat against Norweigan side Rosenborg.

21 players got a go, including stars such as Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, and Mason Mount, but all-in-all, United really struggled.

They nearly held out for a stalemate, but Noah Holm's last-gasp strike means they head back to England with a loss on their pre-season record.

We can't look too much into the performance, though. Rosenborg are in the middle of their season while United had not played for nearly two months.

Ten Hag will just be happy with minutes in the legs.

Anyway, that's enough from me. Thank you for following along, I hope you didn't find it too dull!

Adios (or is that too soon...).

A star is born

Before I head off, I just wanted to give a quick appraisal of Radek Vitek - what a display he put in.

The Czechia keeper made save, after save, after save all evening.

The best of the lot has to be his fingertip stop onto the bar in the second half, that was a stunner.

He can hold his head up high today, he could go far.

United lax

I don't want to scrutinise Manchester United too much as it's only pre-season, but they were pretty poor today.

Both sides that got a runout today really struggled to deal with the Rosenborg press and get out of their half.

The fitness levels just aren't there yet, and it showed. It will come with time as the summer rolls on.

They will be annoyed to concede at the end after surviving for 92 minutes.

That's football!

FULL-TIME: Rosenborg 1-0 Man United

It was indeed the last kick of the game!

Just as Manchester United thought they had scraped a draw from, Rosenborg net right at the death to send them home with a loss.

The Norwegian side deserve it, they kept knocking on the door all evening, and Noah Holm gave them their just rewards.

United really struggled for the majority of the game, but remember, it's only their first match of pre-season.

17:51, 93'

Goal: Rosenborg 1-0 Man United (Holm 90+3')

Rosenborg prove me wrong!

With virtually the last kick of the game, Noah Holm has won it for the hosts.

It's scrappy, but he won't care. Holm blocks his own teammates shot in the area but the ball falls nicely for him to smash home.

Radek Vitek had no chance with that one, and to be honest, it's fully deserved.

THREE added minutes

I'm guessing these three minutes have come from all the substitutions.

Is there to be a late twist?

I hate to be a pessimist, but I doubt it...

17:45, 86'

BIG SAVE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Guess who has come to Man United's rescue, again?

That's right, Radek Vitek.

He once again produces a fabulous save to deny Magnus Holte from just outside the six-yard box.

I know where my vote for Man of the Match is going...

17:43, 85'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Five minutes to go, will there be a winner?

If anyone is going to score, I feel like it will be Rosenborg, they have been hammering at man United's door.

They just can't find the breakthrough.

17:39, 80'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

That pass sums up Manchester United's performance - Radek Vitek passes the ball straight out of play.

Look, you can't be too harsh as it's their first match of pre-season, but still, this has been poor.

All that matters is minutes in the legs at this point, though.

17:36, 77'

SITTER! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

I'm lost for words...

How Rosenborg have not scored there I will never know, Tobias Borkeeiet has just missed a sitter.

The ball is swung into the back post and via a flick it falls to Borkeeiet in acres of space just yards from goal.

But he prods the ball wide.

Actually, the offside flag is up, so it couldn't have counted. I'm not letting him off the hook, though.

A terrible miss.

17:31, 70'

CHANCE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Manchester United finally make a foray forward.

They have been pinned back for the majority of this game, but a quick counter nearly fashions the opening goal.

Ethan Ennis decides to have a crack from the edge of the area and the ball is moving all over the place in the air.

It could go anywhere, but Rasmus Sandberg does well to get across and push it away.

17:29, 69'

HIT THE POST! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Rosenborg hit the woodwork for the FOURTH time!

This time it's Emil Frederiksen who does so, smashing the ball against the foot of the post from a tight angle.

Not sure why he went for goal again, though. Another selfish effort.

17:26, 68'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Another attack for Rosenborg goes begging.

This time Adam Andersson fires wide with a poor effort from distance.

Manchester United are struggling to get out.

17:23, 64'

OFF THE BAR! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Tobias Borkeeiet nearly make an instant impact.

He curls a beautiful effort that is heading toward the top right corner, but somehow Radek Vitek gets a cross to tip the ball onto the bar.

What a sensational save that is!

17:20, 61'

SUBSTITUTIONS: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

This is the part of pre-season I don't enjoy, reporting all the substitutions.

Rosenborg has decided to make eight changes, yes, EIGHT!

Plenty of youngsters getting a run out on what is a massive day for them and their careers.

Holm, Sadiku, Borkeeiet, Holte, Dahl, Volden, Andersson, and Sanderod, all come on!

17:17, 59'

CHANCE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Emil Frederiksen, that is a naughty bit of skill.

He nutmeg's Harry Amass on the right before driving into the area, surely he is going to pull the callback for a tap-in?

Nope. he decides to go alone and pulls his shot wide from a tight angle.

A silly decision.

17:15, 56'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

None of you have answered my dinner question...

With the pace this match is being played at, I could really do with an interesting read, right now.

Nothing is happening in Norway at the minute.

17:11, 53'

SUBSTITUTION: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Rosenborg I can't quite going at Man United in the same way, and they have only made two changes.

One of those is Emil Frederiksen, a pacy winger who could do some damage.

Unsurprisingly, Tomas Nemcik is one of those to have gone off after his horror challenge on Casemiro.

17:08, 50'

SUBSTITUTIONS: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Right, I've managed to find out the new team.

Erik ten Hag has made 10 changes, with Radek Vitek remaining between the sticks.

Manchester United second-half XI: Vitek, Ogunneye, Bennett, Aljofree, Amass, Collyer, Oyedele, Fletcher, Ennis, Scanlon, Hugill

17:03, 46'

SECOND HALF: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

So, Man United are back out with a whole new outfield team.

Give me a minute and I will have all of the new names with you. It won't be easy.

A great opportunity for all the new youthful faces.

Anyway, we are back underway!

Horror challenge on Casemiro

Casemiro is lucky to still be walking after this challenge.

I remember being shocked when I saw it in real-time, but now I have seen it again I can't believe the Brazilian avoided serious injury.

It's a terrible challenge from Tomas Nemcik. If it wasn't a friendly, it's a red card all day long.

'Vitek has been brave'

Nathan Salt, Mail Sport:

Liked a lot of what I saw from Radek Vitek at Accrington Stanley last season. People I spoke to at Stanley raved about his impact during his loan spell and you can see in this half the benefits of playing in men's football. Been brave when he's needed to be - and lucky in the last few minutes - but a higher-level loan should beckon for him.

WATCH: Vitek keeps United level

What a match Radek Vitek is having between the sticks.

if it wasn't for the Czechia keeper, Manchester United could be three goals down.

This double save is probably the highlight of the first half. The second one in particular was a top-class save.

Is a star being uncovered in Norway?

HALF-TIME: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

There goes the whistle for the break.

Rosenborg have been by far the better side, which I guess was to be expected.

Radek Vitek is the only reason Manchester United still have a foothold in this match, he made some impressive stops.

Erik ten Hag won't be too disheartened from that half, though.

ONE added minute

Manchester United have just one minute to hold out.

Erik ten Hag's men will be happy to see the dressing room after a tough opening 45 minutes.

16:46, 44'

BIG SAVE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Radek Vitek is have a cracking match.

he yet again comes up trumps to deny Marius Broholm from close range.

How Rosenberg aren't three or four goals up, I will never know.

16:44, 42'

OFF THE BAR! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

How are Rosenborg not in front?

They have three cracks at goal and young just expect the net to ripple, but Man United stay strong somehow.

Marius Broholm hits the bar, then Sverre Nypan breaks through and forces a strong save from Radek Vitek.

Ole Saeter then can't divert the ball home as it pops into the air.

16:41, 39'

CHANCE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Man United finally fashion a chance!

Mason Mount slides the ball into Ethan Wheatley who takes no time at all to let fly of an effort inside the area.

It's not a bad strike, but it's easy for Sander Tangvik to beat away.

Wheatley probably should have passed the ball over to Ethan Williams, who was in a very good position on the right-hand side.

The best strikers don't pass, though!

16:39, 38'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Tomas Nemcik needs to be careful here...

I know that is odd to say when it's pre-season, but he could easily have a second yellow for taking out Hannibal Mejbri.

Once again, it's probably not a booking because it's only a friendly.

16:36, 34'

DOUBLE SAVE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Radek Vitek to the rescue for Manchester United!

He produces a marvellous double save to keep the united level. First, he leaps to his right to deny Marius Broholm who is in loads of space.

Then after some pinball he somehow prevents Will Fish from putting the ball in the back of his own net.

Brilliant reflexes!

16:34, 32'

CHANCE! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

That's the best move of the match by some distance.

Rosenborg counter Manchester United with pace, and the Red Devils struggle to get back.

The ball ends up in the path of Jesper Reitan-Sunde and he rushes his strike under pressure from Jonny Evans, and it dribbles harmlessly wide.

A waste of a chance.

16:29, 28'

HIT THE POST! Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

What did I say? Things just got that little bit spicier.

Rosenborg suddenly fly forward and Marius Broholm bends a lovely effort onto the foot of the post.

I though it was in, but United survive... just.

16:27, 27'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

So, what are you all having for dinner?

I think I am going to have some noodles, I do love noodles. One of my favourite dishes.

Oh, and by the way, nothing is happening in this game as we speak.

Hopefully, things spice up soon, just look my noodles will be later.

16:24, 23'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

The atmosphere is that of a typical pre-season match.

In all honesty, you could hear a pin drop right now. People are just enjoying the sunshine.

The football isn't exactly getting them on their feet, that's for sure.

16:20, 19'

YELLOW CARD: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United (Nemcik)

Oh, that is a terrible challenge from Tomas Nemcik on Casemiro!

The Slovakian defender goes in high on the Brazilian in what can only be considered as a leg-breaker.

If this wasn't a pre-season game, that's a red card, no questions asked. He is a lucky man.

Thankfully, Casemiro's leg is not broken, he is OK.

16:18, 17'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Marcus Rashford, stop that!

The winger shows off the tricks in his locker by nutmegging Leo Cornic on the left-hand side. very cheeky.

It brings a big 'ooo' from the crowd. they liked that one. I did too - love a bit of skill.

16:15, 14'

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

It's fairly obvious that Rosenborg's fitness levels are miles above those of Manchester United.

I mean, they are in the middle of their season, so that is to be expected.

I must admit, though, I thought United would have more of the ball at this stage, they are struggling to keep a hold of it.

16:12, 11'

DISALLOWED GOAL! - Rosenborg

Rosenborg fans start to celebrate, but it doesn't take long for them to be silenced.

Top scorer Ola Saeter slides the ball into the net but the flag is up for offside.

I mean, it was very tight. United get away with one.

'A huge pre-season for Mount'

Nathan Salt, Mail Sport:

Loathe to read too much into the first few minutes of an opening pre-season game but it is curious to see Mason Mount in a deeper role alongside Casemiro.

We saw that to start the last Premier League campaign - with limited success - but it does feel like if Mount is going to see more minutes this time around it will be in a deeper-lying role given Bruno Fernandes is a must at the No. 10 slot. It's a huge pre-season for Mount, particularly with no Euros to grind him down.

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

This is a classic pre-season friendly. It's not being played at the fastest pace.

Mason Mount tries to find Ethan Willaims with a ball over the top, but he overshoots it and it runs out of play.

Not his finest pass, but we will let him off.

Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Rosenborg have started the much brighter side.

Sverre Nypan fancies his chances from distance so has a pop, but Will Fish is there to divert his strike wide.

From the corner, Mikkel Ceide heads over which brings a big 'ooooo' from the crowd.

A couple of early warning signs for United.

KICK-OFF: Rosenborg 0-0 Man United

Rosenborg get us underway.

How will manchester United fare in their first match of pre-season up in Norway?

We will find out over the course of the next 90 minutes.

Here come the teams!

The music is blaring out, fans are clapping, and the sun is shining!

Manchester United arise from the tunnel for their first test of the 2024-25 pre-season.

The Lerkendal Stadium is a sea of red, it is practically a home game for United.

Kick-off is just moments away.

Big pre-season for Mount

Mason Mount's Manchester United career starts here.

The Englishman's first season in red was extremely disappointing. he was hampered by injuries and struggled to find form when he did play.

Missing out on Euro 2024 would have hurt massively for Mount, he was always one of Gareth Southgate's staples.

Today is a good opportunity for him to show what he has still got in his locker.

Kick-off closing in

Wow, it is bright in Norway!

We are less than 10 minutes from kick-off and the players have got their blood pumping.

With that sunshine blaring down, I'm surprised they even needed a warm-up.

Ten Hag: 'Exciting coming into a new season'

Erik ten Hag, Manchester United boss, on MUTV:

It's always exciting coming into a new season. We've had one week of training and we want to see how it transfers into this match.

I want to see the players on the pitch express this [passion], by showing the fans and getting the win.

United's new look staff

Erik ten Hag has decided to switch things up over the summer.

Manchester United have brought in two assistant managers to aid the Dutchman in the dugout after a disappointing campaign.

One of those is United legend, Ruud van Nistelrooy. 18 years after leaving the club as a player, he has returned.

He doesn't have long hair anymore, though. Disappointing.

The former striker is joined by Rene Hake, as United look to get back on track under new, and old, stewardship.

Where's Zirkzee?

The answer is plain and simple... not here.

Many of you may be wondering where Manchester United's new signing, Joshua Zirkzee is.

The striker signed for United yesterday for £34m from Bologna, but is not ready for pre-season.

Zirkzee was part of the Netherlands squad that reached the semi-final, even featuring in the final minutes against England.

He needs his rest, so it could be a couple of weeks until we see him don the red of United in a match.

New threads

Plain and simple. I like it.

Manchester United will debut their new home kit this evening in Norway, and it even has a new sponsor.

Seeing your team in their new threads for a new season always brings excitement, even if it's only pre-season.

I'm sure sales will certainly increase because of this game...

Not that United need any help with that.

Rosenborg Team News

Here is who Man United are up against.

Rosenborg have gone fairly strong, starting their top scorer Ole Saeter, who has seven goals in 11 league appearances this season.

Today could be the chance for many of these fairly unknown names to get themselves on United's radar.

Remember when Cristiano Ronaldo shone for Sporting Lisbon against the Red Devils over 20 years ago?

We all know what happened after that...

United arrive

Led by Marcus Rashford, Man United have arrived at the Lerkendal Stadium.

I must admit, they do look very focused, don't they? Rashford in particular.

I guess the winger knows how big this season is for him after the last. He will be wanting to set off on the right foot.

Manchester United Team News

Erik ten Hag has named his first 11 of pre-season.

It's a fairly experienced one, with Marcus Rashford, Mason Mount, Casemiro, Jonny Evans and Aaron Wan-Bissaka all starting.

Plenty of youth too, though, with Ethan Wheatley, Hannibal Mejbri, and Radek Vitek all getting the nod.

A decent team, some would say.

Kick-starting things in Norway

A nice little trip to Norway is a nice way to get things started, isn't it?

Manchester United have arrived in Trondheim Norway to take on Rosenborg to get their pre-season rolling.

Why did they choose Rosenborg?

Well, the Norwegian league is still ongoing, and Rosenborg currently sit seventh in the table.

Seeing United come up against a side full of beans, while they have only just returned, could be interesting.

A good way to get the fitness in.

The Ten Hag era continues...

One day after two of Manchester United's players' seasons ended, the next one starts for several others.

Only yesterday, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw started for England in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

Less than 24 hours later, their club teammates are beginning their pre-season as United take on Rosenborg in Norway.

After a summer reshuffle in the backroom staff and beyond, Erik ten Hag and his side are ready to get his reign back on track this campaign.

It feels like just yesterday they won the FA Cup, but here we are.
