Real Madrid 'are worried Toni Kroos could walk out of the club for free next year with the German rejecting a new deal'... and the midfielder will 'wait to see how next season goes before making a decision'
- German star Toni Kroos has just one year left on his contract at Real Madrid
- The club are reportedly 'worried' he might leave for free by turning down talks
- Zinedine Zidane also left the club with one year on his playing contract in 2006
Real Madrid are reportedly 'worried' that German star Toni Kroos will walk out of the Bernabeu for free after rejecting a new deal - with the World Cup winner set to assess how the new campaign goes before making a decision on his future.
Kroos only started three of the last six games for Real Madrid last season under manager Carlo Ancelotti, as the team won the Champions League for the fifth time in nine seasons.
The 32-year-old's current contract expires next summer, and Mundo Deportivo believe that Madrid are concerned Kroos could leave the club for nothing if he does not feel 'comfortable' in the Spanish capital.
Real Madrid are 'worried' about losing Toni Kroos for free, with one year left on his deal
The German midfielder's future look uncertain under manager Carlo Ancelotti
It is thought the German has turned down the chance to renew his contract, wanting to see how he feels next season whilst the club's midfield is in transition mode.
The decision has been viewed as a surprise by the reigning La Liga champions, who were convinced of a one-year extension, but they respect him too much and will not pressure him into signing.
Kroos could make the decision to leave the Bernabeu if he stops feeling 'comfortable' about things in the Spanish capital, or if he loses a guaranteed slot in the first team.
There is no guarantee of a starting role with the team in transition, and recent purchases of Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni, thought to be the future of Real Madrid.
Zinedine Zidane left Real Madrid in 2006 with one year left on his playing contract
He could follow Zinedine Zidane, his former coach, out of the door at Real Madrid, just a year after the Frenchman's second management tenure ended last summer.
Notably, Zidane also left the club with one year left on his playing contract in 2006, creating fears in the Real Madrid heirachy that Kroos may do the same, if he doesn't want to see out his deal.
Kroos previously said it was his wish to retire at Real Madrid, and with the German in the final stretch of his career, many will have a keen eye on what he chooses to do next, both in Spain and abroad.
The 2014 World Cup winner has been viewed as one of the world's greatest centre midfielders, and he would have significant interest if it seemed likely he was moving away from the Bernabeu.
He has made 243 appearances for Real Madrid, and has been an integral part of the club's success domestically and on the European stage.
