Son Heung-min has been appointed the new Tottenham captain after the departure of Harry Kane.

New £40m signing James Maddison and defender Cristian Romero will serve as vice-captains, according to The Athletic.

Boss Ange Postecoglou moved quick to anoint a new skipper after Harry Kane's £100m departure to Bayern Munich earlier today.

The decision is said to have been well received by the Tottenham squad with the trio viewed as the right kind of characters to lead the team into a new era.

Son, 31, has a wealth of captaincy experience for his country, of whom he has 111 caps.

The report states that while the squad are well aware they'll miss Kane, there is a general excitement about the prospects of rising to the challenge of filing his void rather than relying too much on one player.

Kane departed Tottenham for Bayern Munich early on Saturday for £100m and is expected to make his debut for the German champions tonight.

Tottenham's record goalscorer left the club with a heavy heart, but the 30-year-old also insisted it was the right time.

'Obviously a lot of emotions going through me right now. Sad to be leaving the club I have spent nearly 20 years of my life at.

'From an 11-year-old boy to a 30-year-old man now there's been so many great moments and special memories, memories that I'll cherish forever.

'From the moment I've been playing I have been one of your own and have given everything that I possibly could to make you proud and give you as many special moments and memories to hopefully last forever.

'So I felt like this was the time to leave, I didn't want to go into the season with a lot of unresolved future talk. I think it's important for the new manager and players to concentrate on trying to get Tottenham back to around the top of the table and fighting for trophies,' said Kane.

'I wish Ange [Postecoglou] and all the boys all the very best of luck, honestly I'll be watching as a fans' point of view now and really hope the team can be successful.
