Tottenham fans are fearful of their players picking up 'proper injuries' with several noting the 'exhausted' appearance of stars as they arrived for their controversial post-season friendly against Newcastle.

Both Ange Postecoglou's and Eddie Howe's squads were spotted boarding planes just mere hours after their final day matches so they could make it to the other side of the world to partake in the friendly.

The two sides will play against one another in Australia on Wednesday in a friendly which has been described as pure 'madness' by Alan Shearer, with the fixture also facing criticism from England boss Gareth Southgate.

Supporters joined the chorus of dissent after seeing footage of the Spurs arriving at the 100,000 capacity Melbourne Cricket stadium, with many fearful of the risk of serious injury.

'This is proper mental.' One user wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'I'm still tired from Sunday and I only had to get a train back to London. Let's hope none of them get a proper injury.'

Another said: 'Absurd game - should never have been allowed. Just hope the players don't get any injuries that ruin their summer.'

'They look half dead, cross fingers nobody gets a serious injury,' commented a third.

The fixtures comes only 23 days before the start of the European Championships while the Copa America kicks off six days later, with some players on the tour expected to feature in either of the tournaments.

On Sunday, Shearer slammed the friendly and said he would not be happy if he was faced with the situation as a player.

'Can you imagine if you're a player who is playing in either the Copa America or Euro 2024 having to do that? Madness. Crazy,' he told Match Of The Day.

'I wouldn't be happy at all. It's crazy for Newcastle to go and play Spurs there on Wednesday night and then another game.'

The decision to bring Spurs to Australia has also been labelled hypocritical after the club complained about FA Cup replays earlier in the season because of the impacts the workload had on player welfare.

Spurs' quest for a ninth FA Cup ended in a fourth round 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City back in January.

It came after Tottenham was one of the 'big six' clubs that successfully lobbied to have fifth-round FA Cup replays abolished from next season onward to avoid fatiguing their players.

Now there is a push to have FA Cup replays removed from the fourth round as well, meaning matches will be decided by extra time and penalties rather than replaying fixtures if there is a draw at the end of regulation time.

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier had also previously criticised the fixture, also calling it 'not ideal,' especially with the European Championship approaching.

However while Newcastle will play 50 games this season, Tottenham will end their campaign with 41 matches after failing to qualify for Europe and being knocked out of both domestic cups early.

'Played on Sunday, spent 24 hours on a plane, then had to train on Tuesday.' Wrote another user. 'What a joke. Players must be knackered. But we will harp on about player welfare and being a carbon neutral club.'
