The 58-year-old had previously teamed up with co-commentator Ally McCoist during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Champion and McCoist quickly became a fan favourite duo, leading to calls for the pair to commentate on the tournament's final.

The duo are known to be good friends off screen, earning praise for their jokes and friendly nature during the coverage together.

Champion was reunited with McCoist for years later for the World Cup in Qatar and have also worked together on Premier League coverage for Amazon Prime.

However the pair will not be working together for the second successive Euros.

Champion worked for ESPN during Euro 2020 with coverage broadcast in the United States.

He last year joined NBC Sports as a Premier League commentator, along with continuing his work for ESPN as their lead commentator for the MLS and United States men's national team.

Champion had previously recalled how he had known McCoist since meeting at the France 1998 World Cup, but it took 20 years until the tournament in Russia to work together.

In an interview with The Independent, Champion recalled one moment where McCoist's research came in particularly handy during a quiet moment.

'The first game we did, Nigeria vs Croatia in Kaliningrad, it wasn’t a great game and it was dying on its backside a little bit in the second half. There was an injury and nothing really to talk about on the football front,' Champion said.

'You’re always conscious that there will be people shouting at their televisions if you move away from the football too much, but I thought we needed to sustain this, so I turned to Ally and I said: “So Ally, what have you made of your first ever visit to Kaliningrad?”

'He looked at me with a twinkle in his eye and said: “Well Jon...” I knew something was coming. He said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the role of the Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, and indeed the contribution culturally of Immanuel Kant.” At that point, I knew it was taking a very different direction to any football commentary I’d ever done before.'
