Kai Havertz scored twice against his former club as Arsenal tightened their grip on top spot in the Premier League by denting Chelsea's European aspirations with a thumping 5-0 win.

Gunners forward Havertz, who made a £65million switch from Stamford Bridge last summer, registered two of four second-half goals on a remarkable evening at a jubilant Emirates Stadium.

Defender Ben White also claimed a brace for Mikel Arteta's title-chasing side, adding to Leandro Trossard's early opener, as the Blues' recent resurgence floundered in embarrassing fashion in the absence of key man Cole Palmer.

Victory moved Arsenal three points ahead of second-placed Liverpool having now played one game more, while reigning champions Manchester City sit four points behind with two matches in hand.

Trossard keeps Arsenal in title hunt

The wizardry of Leandro Trossard in front of goal continues.

Before this game, the Belgian attacker averaged a goal every 136 minutes for Arsenal in all competitions this season.

His shot conversion rate was also 24 per cent, the best in the Gunners’ team.

On Tuesday night he was on the scoresheet again. That area on the left-hand side of the box was constantly peppered, as he drifted in from wide positions to cause the Chelsea defence issues that they struggled to cope with.

Trossard’s goals — he now has 10 in the Premier League — are helping keep the Gunners in title contention.

Full house for London derby

The match was not a sell-out at lunchtime on Tuesday, with the Emirates set to have sections empty.

That was partly because the match was initially scheduled for March 16. 

With many tickets available, Arsenal opened up sales to members of all tiers. The change worked as the stadium was full.

Takehiro Tomiyasu started for Arsenal after missing the Wolves game. 

It’s good timing, with Jurrien Timber near to a return after an ACL injury. 

Once he is fully fit, the left back spot will be extremely competitive at Arsenal.

Following Nottingham Forest’s VAR outburst — they accused Stuart Attwell of being a Luton fan after their 2-0 defeat by Everton — the topic of who supports who is a hot one.

Peter Bankes, VAR for this game, has not publicly disclosed who he supports. But, interestingly, he doesn’t officiate games featuring Everton or Liverpool…

Chelsea taunts fall flat

Chelsea fans were initially gleeful over the Gunners exiting Europe to Bayern Munich last week. They brought inflatable Champions League trophies and a ‘We love Tuchel’ banner, a nod to former boss Thomas Tuchel, now at Bayern. Arsenal had the last laugh though.

Gunners replace crest with cannon

It has been confirmed that Arsenal will have their iconic cannon symbol on their shirts from next season, instead of the club crest.

They have already used the emblem on their 2022-23 black away kit, and on this year’s green third shirt.

The move is to reflect the north London club’s history, the cannon a reference to the military influence in Woolwich.

The last time an Arsenal home shirt used the symbol instead of the club badge was the 1989-90 season.
