Jurgen Klopp was left furious in the Liverpool dugout after Joe Gomez attempted a wild shot at goal while the Reds were trailing 2-0 against Atalanta.

Liverpool's hopes of giving Klopp a dreamlike Dublin send-off in the Europa League final were severely dampened as the Italians dominated at Anfield on Thursday evening.

Defeat ended Liverpool's previous 33-game unbeaten home streak as Gianluca Scamacca's brace and an 83rd-minute Mario Pasalic strike secured a magic victory for the Serie A visitors.

Gomez - who has never scored a goal for the Reds in 218 appearances across all competitions - decided to take things into his own hands with an effort from range.

Liverpool were desperately scrambling for a way back into the game when the ball rolled out to the England international following an Atalanta clearance from a corner.

The 26-year-old clearly fancied himself with an effort from 35-yards as he took a touch before smashing an attempt on goal that quickly sailed high over the bar and into the crowd.

Exasperated team-mates cut frustrated figures while Klopp stalked through his technical area while shouting animatedly following the failed effort by the defender.

Liverpool must now find a way to overturn the huge 3-0 deficit when they travel to Bergamo in northern Italy next week.

The Reds are well-suited in pulling off famous European comebacks after previously battling back from 3-0 down against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final three-years ago on their way to a sixth title in the competition.

Klopp later blasted his players at full-time and insisted they had 'lost the plot' against Gian Piero Gasperini's side.

'We started really well and then didn't continue. Before they even scored, we just lost the plot a little bit.

'We were everywhere and nowhere. Midfield was spread like that, right and left. I didn't recognise it a bit, it was really quite strange,' he added.

Liverpool will now attempt to bounce-back in the Premier League title when they host Crystal Palace on Sunday.
