Chris Wood has broken his silence following Nottingham Forest's remarkable social media statement last Sunday, claiming that he can 'understand' the club's VAR fury.

Nottingham Forest released a statement at the end of their 2-0 defeat to Everton that has caused huge uproar across the game, insisting that they should have been awarded three penalties in the game.

However, they went further by writing they 'simply cannot accept' the decisions and will 'consider their options' as well as insinuating the VAR Stuart Attwell was a Luton Town supporter, the Hatters also in the battle against relegation.

The post has come in for criticism, with Gary Neville dubbing it 'horrendous' and Jamie Carragher claiming it was like 'a fan in the pub'.

Now, ahead of a crunch tie against title-chasing Manchester City, Chris Wood has told the Daily Telegraph that he understands the club's ire.

'I can understand the frustration, definitely,' Wood said of the remarkable statement on VAR.

'What they put out is down to them, and that's their words. There was frustration from a lot of people, but it's up to the club.'

Following the incident, which has seen the club in the dock with the FA to launch an investigation, Neville also called for the players to forget about it and focus on football rather than off-field events, or they will be 'going down'.

The Tricky Trees are a point above Luton with four games to play, but of those fixtures they will take on City, Chelsea and bottom three sides Sheffield United and Burnley.

However, Wood has insisted that the dressing-room has put the aftermath of Sunday's defeat behind them, as well as claiming that his side have indeed had their fair share of poor decisions.

'We were all angry after the game, upset and frustrated,' he added. 'I think a lot of clubs have had a lot [of bad decisions] but I do think we've had more than our fair share this season – more than we did last season.

'Everybody will complain about VAR in some ways but ultimately we have had a lot [go against us]. We can't make the decisions, we can only control what happens on the pitch and how we play.

'It's unfortunate but we parked it the following day. We've got four games left in quick succession and we can't be down about it. We need to get focused and go again.'

In a season that has seen Forest struggle almost throughout, the 12 goals Wood has scored have been a huge boost to his side's relegation battle, joining Morgan Gibbs-White and Murillo as one of the few success stories.

He also told the Telegraph about how he has thrived since the arrival of Nuno Espirito Santo to the dugout at the City Ground: 'Nuno has put a lot of trust in me and I'm just trying to repay that. Jimenez at Wolves did extremely well with him, and I wanted to hopefully do that same role for Nuno,' he says.

'He seems to be bringing the best out of me and I want to continue to do that for as long as possible.

'I've had a new lease of life. Actually starting games and being given the chance to play has helped a lot.'
