French legend Hugo Lloris has slammed the controversial song that was sung by some Argentina players in the wake of their Copa America win.

Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez posted a video on social media which appeared to show him and a number of his team-mates singing along to a song with is alleged to include 'racist and discriminatory language'.

Fernandez is now facing sanctions from the Premier League, while Chelsea stated that they are conducting an internal disciplinary procedure, and the song has been criticised by his Blues team-mate Wesley Fofana

The defender took to social media to call the video of players singing the song 'uninhibited racism', while FIFA are also investigating the video of the song, which questions the heritage of players in France's squad.

Now, World Cup winning captain and goalkeeper Lloris has called the song 'a proper attack on French people', calling for the Albiceleste to provide a better example for young fans.

'They [Argentina] are the face of football right now, in South America, in the world. They deserve a lot of credit for what they have done on the field for the last four or five years,' Lloris said.

'But when you win, you are an example for others, especially kids.

'It was a proper attack about the French people, especially for the French people who have some African origin and family.'

Fernandez apologised for the video on Tuesday evening, claiming he was caught up in the 'euphoria' of winning the title, but maintained that the words and sentiments of the song, 'do not reflect my beliefs or my character'.

The chant that was heard on the team bus first arose around the 2022 World Cup final that was contested between France and Argentina, with the latter winning the match.

The song appears to claim that French players are from Angola', or have a 'Nigerian' mother and a 'Cameroonian' father.

'It doesn't matter if you are in a moment of euphoria because you have won an important trophy,' Lloris said. 'It demands even more responsibility when you are a winner.

'You don't want to hear or see this kind of thing in football. We all stand against discrimination and racism.

While Fofana has openly criticised the video and by extension actions of his team-mate, a number of Chelsea's French contingent are thought to have unfollowed Fernandez on social media.

At the club currently are Axel Disasi, Benoit Badiashile, Christopher Nkunku, Malo Gusto, Lesley Ugochukwu and Fofana, while Nicolas Jackson appeared to support Fernandez after posting a video of the midfielder interacting with a young black child at the end of one of the Blues' pre-season matches last summer.

Jackson accompanied the video with the caption, 'Enzo Fernandez and this young fan,' followed by two pleading face emojis. The post also included a depiction of black and white fists bumping, with a heart just above.

Jackson also posted an image of himself and Fernandez sitting next to each other during a training session at the club's Cobham's base.

Argentina and Liverpool icon Javier Mascherano has since come out to vocally defend his compatriot, telling Ole: 'If there is something that we Argentines are not, it is racists, far from it.

'If there is something that we are as a country, it is totally inclusive. In Argentina, people from all over the world live and we treat them as they should be treated.'

'What happens is that many times during a celebration, a part of a video can be taken out of context.

'You have to understand the culture of each country and know that sometimes what we perceive as a joke can be misinterpreted in other places.

'Enzo also made it known on social media that he was apologising. Sometimes people try to make things much bigger than they are.'

Argentinian vice-president Victoria Villarruel added in a social media response: 'No country with a colonial history is going to put us down for a song sung on a field nor for speaking a truth that nobody wants to admit.

'Enough of pretending to be offended, hypocrites. Enzo I am with you, Messi thanks for everything! Argentines always keep your heads high! Long live Argentina!'

'We never forced our way of life on anyone, nor will we tolerate that someone tries to do the same to us.'
