However, many fans on social media were surprised by the club's decision to post such a video due to the nature of Gallagher's exit.

Gallagher was reluctant to leave his beloved blues - who he joined at the age of eight - when Aston Villa came knocking earlier in the window.

However, he was told by the Chelsea hierarchy that if he did not want to leave he would not be part of the first-team squad.

After much deliberation, Gallagher decided to make the move to Madrid, but social media users are not happy with the way the club have announced his departure.

One Chelsea fan posted: 'We've genuinely pushed the definition of "one of our own" out of the club to compensate for a menagerie of terrible recruitment decisions. I definitely wish him well & hopefully he excels at a club in a much better state than the one he leaves.'

Another X user said: 'Gave us everything and in the end has been grossly mistreated by the jocks in charge who see nothing but dollar signs in everything they come into contact with. Wish him nothing but the best in Spain. No doubt he'll succeed.'

There was a theme of disappointment at the treatment Gallagher received from Chelsea. A Blues fan, wrote: 'Players come and go at a football club… but when they’re one of your own, you don’t treat them the way they treated Conor Gallagher. No culture; no soul.'

Yet another Blues fan posted: 'Good luck to the lad. Hope he absolutely smashes it at Madrid. Should never of been sold.'

Gallagher made 95 appearances in all competitions while at Stamford Bridge, scoring 10 goals and 10 assists.

50 of those appearances came last season as he took the armband for the majority of the campaign due to long-term injuries sustained by both Reece James and Ben Chilwell.

Now in Spain, Gallagher has a signed a five-year deal with Atletico, which will see him contracted at the Stadio Metropolitano until 2029.
