Shock in the Premier League once again, as a footballer has been arrested in North London on suspicion of rape.

The name of the player, who is in his "early twenties", could not be given for legal reasons.

This is according to The Telegraph and confirmed hours later by The Athletic.

The player is currently in police custody and is being questioned about the alleged crime. According to many media reports, it took place in June.

"On July 4, a report of rape of a woman in her 20s was made to the police. The alleged rape was reported to have occurred in June 2022," a police statement read.

Police added that the man "was arrested at an address in Barnet on suspicion of rape and detained. Enquiries into the allegations are ongoing".

On the other hand, as The Telegraph explains, the footballer's club (which has not been made public) has declined to comment. They add that the player is expected to go to the World Cup in Qatar with his national team.
