Cody Gakpo made the 'best choice' by signing for Liverpool amid interest from Man United, claims Dutch icon Ronald De Boer, who believes he will thrive as a left winger under Jurgen Klopp and 'adapt quickly' in England
Dutch legend Ronald de Boer has said Cody Gakpo made the 'best choice' by signing for Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool.
Gakpo, 23, signed for the Reds from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven during the winter transfer window for £45m, despite initial interest from Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.
But in a blow to the Dutch manager, de Boer believes that Gakpo, who played for Holland at the 2022 World Cup, has made the right call to opt for Anfield instead.
Liverpool paid £45million to sign Dutch forward Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven last week
Ronald de Boer declared that 22-year-old Gakpo had made the right choice with Liverpool
In an interview, de Boer told talkSPORT he had seen Gakpo's potential for a couple of years. He said: 'I think it’s important for him, he’s better when he starts on the left and comes inside.
'I think Liverpool plays a little bit like that, I remember [Luis] Diaz playing there, who is also by the way an exceptional talent.
'So when he is fit he will have to fight for that spot. In the meanwhile, he [Gakpo] can grow in that role, I think Liverpool needs a player like that on that side at the moment.
'I think for me, this is the best choice he could have made at this moment.'
Fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag was also interested in singing Gakpo for Manchester United
In a decade with the Holland national team between 1993 and 2003, de Boer made 67 appearances, scoring 13 goals.
The 52-year-old, who now works with PSV's Dutch rivals Ajax, revealed more about Gakpo's ability on his arrival to Liverpool. De Boer said: 'He has the ability to score easily with his right foot coming in from the left to the right, he has the speed, the dribbling and I think his mind is also very good.
'When I see him and when he talks on television, he looks to be a very clever boy, he knows what he wants, he still has a lot of potential to grow to be an even better player.
'His potential for me, he’s one of the biggest talents in Holland.'
De Boer thinks Gakpo, who scored three goals at the World Cup, should get more physical
He said Gakpo would evolve as he gets to grips with football in the Premier League. The Dutch legend said: 'He will also get a little bit quicker and more physical, that will come in the years of playing in the Premier League, he will adapt quickly.
'I think he will only get better, and from my point of view, he made the right choice.'
Gakpo, who scored three goals for Holland in Qatar, could make his Liverpool debut in Monday's trip to London to face Brentford.
