Man United made the shock decision to stick with manager Erik ten Hag for the new season following an end of season review – but a new report has suggested that some of the potential replacements were left less than impressed with what the club were offering.

Ten Hag will remain in the job for next season and has entered into talks with the Old Trafford club over a contract extension despite the team's lowest ever Premier League finish of eighth.

The decision comes after an end-of-season review by the club's board for the 2023-24 campaign, which finished on a high with a shock FA Cup final win over favourites Manchester City.

The likes of Thomas Tuchel, Gareth Southgate and Mauricio Pochettino had been touted as potential replacements,

United spoke to a number of managers and The Times claim that two of them did not find the proposal all that appealing.

One is said to have been 'astounded by the low wage that he would receive if he took the job'.

Another 'was left unimpressed by the transfer budget, which is roughly £35m gross this summer.

Along with Southgate, Pochettino and Tuchel, Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Brighton's recently-departed head coach Roberto De Zerbi were candidates to succeed Ten Hag if the Dutchman departed.

It has also emerged that Fulham boss Silva held talks with United.

Silva has bolstered his reputation at Craven Cottage. Having initially led the club back to the Premier League in 2022, the Portuguese has built a team that comfortably stayed in the top-flight in their two previous seasons.

Silva’s future could come under scrutiny again this summer as he emerges as a possible replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo at Nottingham Forest.

Santo’s future at the City Ground is unclear heading into the summer and Silva has admirers at Forest.

Former Ajax Amsterdam coach Ten Hag had come under increasing pressure after 20-times English champions United suffered their worst start to a season since 1962-63 with eight defeats in their first 15 matches in all competitions.

They ended up eighth after 14 defeats in their 38 league games and bowed out of the Champions League in the group phase.

Ten Hag's job security had been the subject of speculation all season and many pundits believed the FA Cup final would be the Dutchman's last game with the team, win or lose.

But now reports claim the club are prepared to back the coach with a new two-year deal.

That deal, according to the Telegraph, will supersede his current contract, which runs out in 2025, meaning he will have three more years at Old Trafford from this summer.

The club's end of season review had dragged on into a third week following the end of a campaign.

Reports suggest that Ten Hag was disappointed by the club's decision to talk with other candidates, yet he is not thought to feel his position has been entirely undermined, accepting his future was in doubt.

This reported contract would therefore be a sign of good faith from the club, with Ratcliffe seemingly willing to back Ten Hag in the first summer of the new INEOS era at Old Trafford.

The end of season review took some time, however INEOS feel that it is fair given it is the first they have ever conducted, and while similar evaluations are set to take place every year, their is confidence the process will be more straight-forward.

It comes at a time when plenty of changes have been made behind the scenes at United, with Omar Berrada set to take up his new role as CEO in July, with Dan Ashworth set to arrive from Newcastle as sporting director, and Jason Wilcox already appointed technical director.

Mail Sport reported on Tuesday evening that after making their decision, the club's hierarchy are now keen to see how Ten Hag can thrive within their new set-up.
