Spanish football legends Iker Casillas and Juanfran Torres locked horns in an entertaining game of padel on the opening day of the Hexagon Cup, which was described by organisers as a 'dream to come to life'.

The brand new padel tournament, which has been backed by high-profile sports stars Nadal, Andy Murray and Robert Lewandowski, debuted at Madrid Arena on Wednesday.

The Hexagon Cup boasts a groundbreaking format with six teams of three pairs - Male, Female and Next Gen - competing for a prize fund of €1million (£860,000).

Franchises owned by Murray, Nadal and Lewandowksi make up half of the field, with Hollywood actress Eva Longoria also backing a US team.

Keen to catch the action, Longoria video called in on the opening day to reveal that she is planning to attend the tournament this weekend, delighting fans who had already booked their tickets.

Ex-Formula One driver Pablo Montoya is also set to attend the tournament on Friday. 

The Hexagon Cup's debut started with a padel derby between Real Madrid Legends and Atletico Madrid Legends, with the teams captained by Casillas and Juanfran respectively. 

With the two Madrid football clubs set to face off in LaLiga on Sunday, the padel game served as an appetiser for the derby at the Bernabeu. 

Despite losing the match to his fierce Atletico rivals, Casillas said: 'I love padel and to see an event like this in Madrid fills me with pride. 

'Tournaments like the Hexagon Cup help the internationalisation of the sport and I am delighted to be here today'. 

Victorious captain Juanfran added: 'A few years ago padel players didn't have so much visibility and tournaments like the Hexagon Cup show how much the sport is growing.'

Former football stars Alfonso Perez, Dani García Lara, Mista, Miguel Angel Moya, Luis Milla and Roberto Jimenez were also involved in the padel derby.

Rafa Nadal Academy powered by Richard Mille enjoyed a superb first day of the tournament as they claimed two wins in the Female and Next Gen categories. 

Youngsters Daniel Santigosa and Guillermo Collado triumphed over fan-led Hexagon Team duo Alonso Rodriguez and Pablo Cardona in a tight 6-2, 3-6 and 10-2 contest, before women's duo Martita Ortega and Gemma Triay claimed the team's second win by beating Sofia Araujo and Delfina Brea of AD/vantage Team, owned by two-time Wimbledon champion Murray.

The closely-fought match ended 6-3, 4-6 and 10-5, meaning the Rafa Nadal Academy has taken an early lead in the round robin qualification.

Elsewhere in the Next Gen category, Alex Chozas and Emilio Chamero from ElevenEleven Team USA beat RL9's duo David Gala and Emilio Jensen 6-3, 1-6 and 10-3.

Team USA is owned by Longoria while RL9 is backed by Lewandowski, with the franchise name a call to his initials and shirt number.

At the end of an enjoyable day in Madrid, Hexagon Cup founder Enrique Buenaventura said: 'Finally after six months of planning and preparation, the Hexagon Cup dream has come to life. 

'The players are delighted with the competition, there is a great atmosphere with an amazing Fan Zone, and this is truly a level of experience never seen before in padel. 

'We urge sports fans to come and enjoy the event and see for themselves, as it is not to be missed!'
