Real Madrid and Manchester City played out a pulsating 3-3 draw at the Bernabeu in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.

Bernardo Silva's cheeky free kick within two minutes put the reigning champions ahead, but Real hit back straight away with Eduardo Camavinga's shot deflecting in off Ruben Dias.

Almost instantly, Carlo Ancelotti's side were 2-1 up through Rodrygo, before Phil Foden's stunner in the second half brought City level.

Josko Gvardiol scored arguably an even better goal to put City back in front, but Federico Valverde evened things up again with a crisp volley to ensure these teams couldn't be separated heading into the second leg in Manchester next week.

Police presence strengthened amid terror threat

Local police enlisted the help of thousands of additional officers around the Bernabeu on Tuesday night after a pro-Islamic State media channel published threats of violence at Champions League fixtures.

The terror alert level in Spain was classified as high risk - four out of five – and more than 2,000 police and civil guard officers were being deployed.

UEFA had discussed the terror threats with both Real Madrid and Manchester City as part of the usual brief ahead of European matches. Checks like lifting manhole covers were deemed necessary in the hours before kick-off.

'These announcements are usually propaganda actions to provoke fear,' acting mayor of Madrid Inmaculada Sanz said.

'Both the security forces and the intelligence services are studying any possible threat, but there is nothing that makes us foresee a situation of special risk.'

Real Madrid legend praises Man City 

Some serious kudos for Pep Guardiola's team from an unlikely source, with Iker Casillas believing these two teams are the new rivalry in European football.

Casillas – who won three Champions League titles – said: 'City has replaced Bayern Munich in the European rivalry that existed with Real. They are the two best teams in the world in my opinion.'

Real attempt to boost atmosphere 

UEFA did grant Real's request to close the retractable roof on the eve of this first leg, confirming the decision on the morning of the game.

It's something Real have done before, in the last round against Leipzig, and was designed to whip up more of an atmosphere inside a stadium that usually needs no rousing.

They will have been further boosted by news that Kevin De Bruyne was only named on the bench for the visitors. It transpired that this wasn't a tactical move for Guardiola but that De Bruyne, who had been expected to start, became unwell. So unwell that he didn't even warm up beforehand.

City limit Haaland's marketing responsibilities 

Erling Haaland's superstardom at City is such that the club had to limit the amount of autographs he signed, it emerged in Spanish outlet Relevo on Tuesday.

The Norwegian was said to have spent half an hour every day penning his signature on photos and recording video messages for anybody who asked. It ground Haaland down but, given the 23-year-old's personality, he didn't mention that the workload was proving a problem.

City – who are all too aware of the marketing power Haaland possesses – noticed the issue and now filter external requests and he apparently does a signing session once a month.

Unexpected celebrities spotted in away end

Some quirky spots on this trip to Madrid. Ex-Blackburn Rovers manager Gary Bowyer was in the away end – not his first European away jaunt this season – while the father of a Spice Girl also found himself in the Spanish capital.
