Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has apologised for the 'completely wrong' timing of his trip to London to speak with West Ham this week.

On Monday, he flew to London to speak with the Hammers as they assess their options, with David Moyes' future up in the air.

And Amorim was up in the air himself shortly after, flying back to Portugal and landing just after midnight on Tuesday, where a swarm of journalists bombarded him with questions.

Sporting are chasing down the Portuguese title and can seal it with a win over second-placed Porto on Sunday night.

'It was a mistake. The timing was completely wrong,' Amorim admitted after flying away in such a critical week.

'I'm always asking my players to be respectful, and I wasn't, even if I informed the club before'.

'I'm so sorry and I apologise to fans, club and players'.

Amorim is a hero to Sporting and is on the verge of sealing a second title in four seasons.

When he won the title in 2020/21, it was their first in almost 20 years.

He was the favourite for the Liverpool job after Xabi Alonso confirmed his intention to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, but their interest cooled and they have now agreed a compensation deal with Feyenoord for their manager Arne Slot. The package for Slot could reach £9.42million.

David Moyes' future is unclear despite his success at the London Stadium and West Ham's open courting of Amorim is a foreboding sign

Caught in the middle of this is Moyes, who must be wondering what else he has to do to fully win over the West Ham faithful.

He delivered them a Europa Conference League title last season and they are once again in contention for European football, having finished sixth, seventh, and 14th in the last three campaigns.
