Love Island narrator Iain Stirling's hilarious commentary took an unexpected turn, after he made an awkwardly-timed quip during Friday night's episode of the ITV2 show.

The latest episode of the show clashed with Scotland's Euro 2024 opener against Germany, which kicked off the latest ediction of the tournament.

And in a voiceover, Iain joked that for viewers watching the show on catch-up, 'Scotland just thrashed Germany 4-0,' before quipping: 'A man can dream.'

Whilst Iain, 36, who hails from Edinburgh and is an avid Liverpool football fan, was joking about Scotland's Euro prospects, it proved to be more ill-timed than expected, as the nation were thrashed 5-1 by Germany in the dramatic match.

It took less that 10 minutes for the host nation to score and by halftime, Scotland were 3-0 down.

A number of supporters joked that the side had been 'battered like a Mars bar,' which is a traditional dish in Scotland.

It's not the first time Iain's football comments have sparked anger with the public after they branded him 'classless' and 'out of touch' during this year's Soccer Aid charity match.

Throughout the 90 minutes, Iain and Sam Matterface, 46, provided the commentary all while urging those at home to donate to the charitable cause.

Halfway through the programme he told viewers: '£40, what's that? A takeaway for the whole family? Why not cook and give us £40 instead?'

Fans then took to social media to share their upset at the comments, with many saying the presenter is out of touch with reality.

Realising he may have said the wrong thing, Iain later posted to his Instagram a photo of himself in the stadium, defending his previous statement.

He wrote: 'You can still donate now so please give what you can. And if you can’t donate for whatever reason thanks so much for watching along. Love x'

Soccer Aid raised £15 million for Unicef as the charity football match welcomed celebrities such as Tom Hiddleston, 43, Usain Bolt, 37, and Robbie Williams, 50, on the night.
