Liverpool low-down: Arne Slot starts with daunting away trips to Portman Road and Old Trafford... while a tough end-of-season run - including clashes against Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal - looks set to decide the title

Arne Slot will begin his reign as Liverpool manager with an eye-catching trip to Portman Road to face newly-promoted Ipswich Town

The Dutchman has the unenviable task of following legendary former boss Jurgen Klopp, who brought an end to a successful nine-year spell on Merseyside at the end of the last campaign.

The fixture list has been relatively kind to the new manager, who will face only one other big-six side in his first seven domestic matches. That clash sees the Reds take on rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford and a meeting against his compatriot Erik ten Hag

Aside from their tricky away fixtures, Liverpool will look to get maximum points from home games against Brentford, Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth and even Crystal Palace early on in the campaign.

Slot's first tough run of fixtures looks to be towards the end of October when his side will welcome Chelsea to Anfield before travelling to the Emirates to take on Arsenal.  Home clashes against Brighton and Aston Villa follow ahead of the visit of Manchester City on November 30.

The 45-year-old will be hoping to immediately endear himself to the home faithful by securing a positive result in the first Merseyside derby of the 2024-25 season, which is set to take place on December 12.

It could also be the last-ever derby at Goodison Park, with the Toffees set to move into their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock next term.

As ever, the Christmas period promises to be a defining part of the season as the Reds faces tricky London fixtures against Tottenham and West Ham either side of an Anfield Boxing Day showdown against Leicester.

Liverpool's first Premier League game of 2025 is the return clash against the Red Devils and they are set to travel to the Etihad to meet Pep Guardiola's side for a second time at the end of February.

Slot and his Reds side may well be thankful for a fairly gentle start to the season but the end of the campaign has been anything but kind. The end of the 2023-24 Premier League campaign saw Liverpool falter and eventually fade away in the title race.

The Dutchman will be keen to avoid the same plight - whatever their objectives are for the new season - when they meet Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea in three of their final five fixtures.

A trip to Stamford Bridge on May 3 comes either side of home clashes against Tottenham and Arsenal, which could decide the destination of the Premier League title.

Liverpool fans will be pleased to see that they have avoided Wolves in their final league game of the season, though Crystal Palace have induced similar dread among the fanbase in recent season, particularly at Anfield.

The Eagles inflicted the final defeat of Jurgen Klopp tenure, effectively ending their chances of winning the title. Slot will be keen to make happier memories when his side takes on Palace on May 25.
