Juventus have withdrawn from the European Super League plot in a hammer blow for the controversial breakaway competition.

The Italian giants have requested to re-join the European Club Association (ECA), a body representing over 600 clubs which has strongly opposed the Super League.

It leaves just Barcelona and Real Madrid standing from the original 12 clubs who proposed the European Super league in 2021.

All 12 sides, including the Premier League's 'big six', were excluded from the ECA after the proposal but Juventus are set to become the 10th to be readmitted.

'ECA's door is always open to clubs who believe in collective interests, progressive reform and working constructively with all stakeholders,' said the body's chairman Nasser El-Khelaifi, who is also PSG's president.

Juventus began the process of pulling out of the Super League last year but required dispensation from Barca and Madrid to follow through.

Last year, the European Court of Justice ruled that UEFA and FIFA broke EU law by blocking the formation of the Super League, sparking the prospect of it rearing its head once more.

A22, the driving company behind the competition then unveiled a new format with 64 clubs - 32 teams each in men's and women's competitons.

It was immediately rejected by clubs including Manchester United, Bayern Munich, and Atletico Madrid.

As Mail Sport reported in February, the Super League isn't fully off the table.

Bernd Reichart, the chief executive of A22, still believes it can have lift-off and drag English clubs along.

He believes that if they can get the rest of Europe on board then the Premier League teams would have to follow — they can't play a 'European' Cup all on their own.

A huge backlash from fans in 2021 meant that the £4.5billion project was effectiely dead in the water within 48 hours of its announcement.

Vehement protests saw Chelsea become the first English club to back out before the rest followed suit, all publishing apologetic statements.

The final nail in the coffin at the time came when then-Juventus supremo Andrea Agnelli admitted a European Super League cannot go ahead without the support of the English clubs.

The 12 clubs who had tried to breakaway were dubbed the 'Dirty Dozen'.
