Ronald Koeman appeared at a press conference this Friday and he did so because it was his obligation. He had to face the press one more time and whilst he did so he knew perfectly all the movements that are going on behind his back.
As Joan Laporta is intimating to friends that he is going to change coach the first chance he gets, the club are already moving to look for a replacement. If they don't have one then it's because they haven't decided or they can't find one, or they don't have enough to pay a candidate.
"Nobody tells me anything, but I have eyes and ears," explained Koeman on Friday.
Barcelona's board have already decided to dismiss the Dutch coach. Laporta was at the sports city for one hour and a half on Friday but he wasn't there to encourage Koeman. They say that on the return flight from Lisbon there wasn't even any words spoken between president and coach. The last messages Koeman has received from the president have been through his advisers.
Koeman is being disrespected in an undeserving way, they did so in June when they told him they were taking 15 days to find a replacement for him. Barcelona's board wanted the Dutch coach to resign, but since he didn't they had to stick with him after reducing his authority in front of his coaching staff and his players.
Then came the supposed interest in renewing his contract. Of course, with conditions, and once again Laporta leaked it to his journalist friends. In three minutes Koeman already knew what had happened. Laporta wanted to get involved into the coach's role by suggesting the formation and which players the coach should use, and this was another undeserved treatment for Koeman.
It is true that he wasn't Laporta's choice, but the treatment he has given him is not deserved by a legend of the club. Even if he doesn't like the way the team plays, it must be remembered that during the summer there was no reinforcing done, the squad was actually diminished.
Yet, after just three games Laporta was already questioning Koeman and undermining him. In the end it all comes down to a struggle between Koeman's realism and Laporta's illusion. The team is what it is.
