Spain wonderkid Lamine Yamal has revealed he has brought his homework with him to Euro 2024.

Yamal, 16, broke onto the scene with Barcelona last season, making his debut at the age of 15.

The winger has quickly developed into a key player for the Catalan giants and earned a first call-up to the national team in September 2023, before he scored on his debut against Georgia. This meant the 16-year-old became the youngest player to ever feature and score for La Roja. 

Yamal has since racked up seven caps and is likely to be a key player for Luis de la Fuente's side in Germany this summer.

And, speaking after arriving in the country ahead of Spain's opener against Croatia on Saturday, Yamal, who turns 17 on July 13, explained how his focus wouldn't just be on football.

'I brought my homework here because I'm in the 4th year of ESO,' he said.

'I have online classes too and those are going fine. I hope the teacher doesn’t get mad at me.'

The ESO refers to the third stage of the Spanish education system, with this compulsory for students between the ages of 12 and 16.

On the pitch, Yamal comes into the tournament off the back of a productive club season for Barcelona where he racked up five goals and eight assists, while he was regularly relied on by former boss Xavi.

The 16-year-old is one of a number of talented youngsters within La Roja's squad for Euro 2024 and will become the youngest ever player to play at a Euros if he features.

21-year-old Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams joins him, and Yamal's Barcelona team-mate Pau Cubarsi, 17, was named in De La Fuente's provisional 29-man squad for the tournament, before he was cut.

And De La Fuente was full of praise for Yamal when discussing the 16-year-old's potential.   

'This kind of footballer is a special breed,' the 62-year-old recently told Reuters.

'It’s unusual for a 16-year-old boy to have that kind of self-confidence, the ability to play and look like a veteran. Because only the chosen ones have that.  

'I’m not surprised by their (Yamal, Cubarsi and Williams) potential and I think that we coaches need to give them the opportunity, balance, security and stability and help them to enjoy the moment.

'(We need) to be responsible and to put their talent, that super talent they have, at the service of the collective so the entire team grows and thrives.'

Along with Croatia, Spain will take on Italy and Albania in Group B as they look to put their embarrassing exit at the last-16 stage of the 2022 World Cup behind them.
