Paul Scholes believes England could solve their midfield problems by moving Trent Alexander-Arnold into a new role and bringing one youngster into the starting line-up.

The Liverpool vice-captain has struggled in a new midfield position after moving from right-back into a more central role where he sits alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham.

England boss Gareth Southgate admitted he is actively experimenting to find a solution to the engineroom conundrum with many believing other players are better suited to the midfield role.

Alexander-Arnold was substituted just after half time in Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Serbia after struggling with the demands of the position against a high-pressing Denmark side.

Southgate is expected to make several changes for England's final group match against Slovenia on Tuesday and is assessing a number of personnel to feature in midfield.

Scholes is well-versed in the discussion after previously being played out of position with the Three Lions in a bid to accommodate Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in central roles.

The Manchester United legend wasn't afforded the frequent luxury of playing in his best position with the national team and later decided to retire early from England duty.

Now, Scholes has offered a solution on how to get the best out of Alexander-Arnold by explaining the 25-year-old should instead start at left-back as a replacement for the injured Luke Shaw.

Newcastle's Kieran Trippier has currently filled in for Shaw, but Scholes thinks the Liverpool star would be a better fit and also called for Chelsea's Cole Palmer and Man United's Kobbie Mainoo to be given a chance.

Posting on his Instagram, Scholes said: 'Sunday am thoughts... TAA left-back, Kobbie Mainoo centre mid, Palmer on the right... would give reasons but too many touchy f***ers out there.'

Scholes didn't provide any further explanation for his suggestion after stressing his comments would likely be rebuffed by critics and football fans.

However, many supporters are already demanding Mainoo be given minutes at Euro 2024 after impressing during the end-of-season run-in with United.

The 19-year-old has become a permanent figure in Erik ten Hag's midfield and has big-match experience after impressing against Liverpool and also scoring in the FA Cup final victory over Man City.
