David Beckham and Cesc Fabregas are set to battle it out to sign a former Manchester United star, according to a report.

Both former footballers are now working in off-field roles in the game, with Beckham overseeing proceedings at Inter Miami in the MLS and Fabregas assistant manager at Italian side Como.

According to The Sun, both men are interested in signing free agent that left Old Trafford this summer following the expiry of his contract at the club.

Raphael Varane, 31, signed for the Red Devils in 2021, joining from Real Madrid where he won four Champions League titles among a plethora of other accolades.

Now, he could be set to choose between the United States and Italy as two former Premier League midfielders reportedly prepare to go head to head for his signature.

A Real Madrid legend, he would join up with ex-Barcelona stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Jordi Alba if he were to make the move to the States.

His move would follow a somewhat tradition of a number of the world's top stars moving to the country in the twlight of their careers.

There is now, reportedly, however, another side keen to secure his signature in the form of one of Serie A's newest sides.

Como earned promotion from Serie B last season, with Fabregas playing a key role in their rise as assistant to Osian Roberts.

They are now looking to achieve survival in Serie A next term, and want to add to their squad to help their chances of doing so.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Fabregas, also formerly of Barcelona and working as a pundit for BBC's coverage of Euro 2024, sees Varane as his dream signing, but understands it will be tough to intice him to move to Italy.

It is thought he was on around £340,000-a-week at United, and he would have to dramatically decrease that if he were to join Como.

In total, he made 95 appearances for United in an injury-hit spell with the club.
