Sir Jim Ratcliffe spoke of pride at Manchester United's players and staff for their FA Cup success - despite the looming axe over manager Erik ten Hag

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo got the goals for the Red Devils to achieve their first success in England's senior club competition for the first time in eight years - but regardless of the result, it was widely expected that ten Hag will be fired as manager for Man United's underwhelming campaign in the league and Europe.

Ratcliffe, who became co-owner of Manchester United back in February, said it was a 'glorious feeling' to achieve his first silverware with the club, and hailed their opponents Manchester City, who were overwhelmingly backed to win on Saturday.

According to The Telegraph, Ratcliffe said: 'It is a glorious feeling to win the FA Cup final at Wembley. Manchester United clearly were not the favourites to win today, but they played with total commitment & skill & overcame one of the great teams in football.

'We are all very proud of the players & the staff who work tirelessly to support them.'

In the tunnel after the game, one journalist asked Ratcliffe whether ten Hag would be sacked, but the 71-year-old chose to ignore the question.

It is widely thought that the Dutchman will be axed by the Red Devils after his side's disappointing campaign, which saw them finish eighth - their worst-ever finish in the Premier League.

Mauricio Pochettino, Thomas Frank, Kieran McKenna, Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter are among the various names being linked to the Man United job.

Mail Sport understands Man United have spoken to Thomas Tuchel as well as representatives of Ipswich’s McKenna, who is also a target for Chelsea as they seek a successor for Pochettino after the two parties mutually split on Tuesday.

Ten Hag made one final plea to save his job after Saturday's final, admitting that he did not know if he had just taken charge of his final game with the club.

Ratcliffe completed a £1.3bn deal back in February to become a co-owner of Man United, with INEOS taking a 27.7% stake in the club, and is in the process of fixing some of the club's problems on and off the pitch.
